Following the success of the Everyday People, Everyday Rights pilot project in the City of Hume last year, the Victorian Equal Opportunity & Human Rights Commission has partnered with the Neighbourhood Justice Centre in 2010 to bring this innovative human rights project to the City of Yarra.

Everyday People, Everyday Rights aims to better equip the people of Yarra to understand and assert their rights by illustrating that far from being an ideal but remote concept, human rights are in fact, real, personally relevant, and fundamental to the day-to-day lives of individuals and the wider society.

The Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission and Neighbourhood Justice Centre wish to extend a big thank you to everyone who came along to the community meetings in June.

Community input at the meetings is vital to the Everyday People, Everyday Rights project. Through sharing human rights experiences we were able to identify some of the key issues affecting different groups within the municipality. It also gave us the opportunity to see how human rights are operating in the day to day lives of everyday people and the areas where more work needs to be done.

We now have a big job ahead synthesising the different stories that came out of the meetings and developing new educational materials that highlight these issues.

Thank you also to the Community Reference Group members, venues, meeting facilitators and staff who assisted in organising and running the meetings.

The next phase of the project is underway - recruiting the Everyday People, Everyday Rights Human Rights Facilitators and the development of new resources and educational materials.

Human Rights Facilitator Program
We are now accepting expressions of interest from members of the community to apply for the Human Rights Facilitator Program with a view to becoming Human Rights Facilitators in the City of Yarra.

Facilitators have a key role to play in the community - in helping to spread the human rights message to all corners, in continuing to educate people within the community about their human rights and through this empowering them to assert their rights.

To date we have received expressions of interest from people who attended the community meetings and felt inspired to stay involved. If you didn't attend a community meeting you can still apply to become a Human Rights Facilitator.
