This succinct workshop will:
- provide a brief overview of rights and responsibilities under equal opportunity laws, including the definitions of unlawful discrimination, sexual harassment, bullying, vilification and victimisation
- provide a brief overview of rights and responsibilities under the Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities
- outline options available to individuals or groups to assert their rights.

The new Equal Opportunity Act 2010 will come into effect on 1 August 2011.
This succinct workshop will:
- outline the changes to equal opportunity law contained in the new Act
- consider the implications for organisational policies and procedures
- outline the Commission's new functions.

Introduction to the Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities

This workshop provides a more detailed introduction to the Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities than the overview session.
This workshop will:
- outline key human rights concepts
- introduce the human rights protected in the Charter
- detail the operation of the Charter
- explore Charter obligations and remedies
- detail the functions of the Commission.
Participants will receive the 34-page Guide to civil and political rights.

Introduction to human rights for local government

The session will:
- discuss the key messages of human rights and equal opportunity training, including practical responses to frequently asked questions
- explore effective delivery methods, tools and activities
- enable trainers to practice skills and methods for conducting equal opportunity training in your workplace
- provide trainers with a package that can be adapted and reproduced only for in-house training delivery by participants in their workplace.

- provide an update on the application of human rights and equal opportunity principles to organisational policies and procedures
- assist you to identify behaviours that may lead to unlawful discrimination, sexual harassment and bullying
- explore effective strategies to prevent and resolve issues of inappropriate workplace behaviour.

This workshop will prepare the participant to fulfil the role of equal opportunity contact officer in the workplace.
The session will:
- consider standards of appropriate workplace behaviour under your policies and the law
- explore the purpose of the contact officer role and the knowledge and skills required to fulfil it
- explore the steps involved in handling complaints and the role of a contact officer within them
- provide participants with an opportunity to practice the skills required to fulfil the role effectively
- provide participants with a 60-page resource manual and guide to the role.

- provide an update on equal opportunity and human rights legislation and case law
- give an opportunity to discuss common dilemmas experienced by contact officers
- provide participants with an opportunity to practise the skills required to fulfil the role effectively.

Mediation of workplace disputes

This workshop will:
- consider when mediation can be used in the resolution of workplace complaints
- assist participants to understand the principles and processes of successful mediation
- provide participants with the opportunity to practice mediation skills in a safe environment.

Investigating formal complaints
Date: Thursday 28 October, 9.30am - 4.30pm
This workshop will:
- outline the context of formal workplace complaint investigation, including alternative dispute resolution options
- examine the principles of effective workplace investigation including timeliness, procedural and substantive fairness and confidentiality
- itemise the steps needed to conduct an effective workplace investigation
- provide participants with the opportunity to practice some of the skills required in conducting investigations, including making findings and recommendations.

The process of returning to work after illness or injury can sometimes give rise to real or perceived discrimination.
This workshop, jointly developed with WorkSafe, will:
- provide a brief overview of equal opportunity law as it applies to the return to work (RTW) process
- consider common stages in the RTW process where complaints of discrimination arise and how to reduce these risks
- explore what to do if an injured worker returning to work feels that they are being treated poorly because of their injury or ill health.

Managing flexible work arrangements

This workshop will:
- outline the obligations arising from the ‘reasonable alterations' provisions of the Equal Opportunity Act and the pregnancy and family responsibilities provisions of the Fair Work Act
- identify the benefits of managing flexible work arrangements effectively
- identify strategies for responding to the challenges of managing flexible work arrangements.

Inclusive schools

This workshop will:
- explore the principles and concepts behind human rights, equal opportunity and inclusion
- examine how discrimination, harassment and abuse can happen in schools and the impact on the whole school community
- examine schools obligations under the Equal Opportunity Act, Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities, and relevant federal legislation
- identify the relevant policies, complaint resolution procedures and practices that should be in place to assist schools to meet their legal obligations
- outline the organisations and resources available to support schools to meet their obligations and pursue good practice.

Disability standards in education

This workshop will:
- provide an overview of the federal Disability Standards for Education
- consider education providers responsibility to make ‘reasonable adjustments' in an education context
- consider the definition of ‘unjustifiable hardship' under the standards
- consider the application of the standards.

Play by the rules: promoting fair and safe sport

This workshop is designed for officials, committee members, coaches, players and anyone else involved in sport.
This workshop will:
- explore discrimination and harassment in sport and identify the relevant laws that apply
- explore how sports and clubs can prevent discrimination and harassment from occurring
- assist sports and clubs to meet their responsibilities under the law and the new Victorian Code of Conduct for Community Sport
- identify the organisations and resources available to assist sporting organisations to ensure their activities are free of discrimination and harassment.
